Samuel Chu is the President of The Campaign for Hong Kong. He has successfully advocated for landmark U.S. policies, including the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act and sanctions against Chinese and Hong Kong officials for human rights violations. In July 2020, Hong Kong authorities issued arrest warrants for Chu, making him the first foreign citizen to be targeted under the city's draconian National Security Law. Over the past two decades, Chu has organized successful campaigns on civil rights, food security, and economic justice and has trained thousands of political organizers and pro-democracy activists globally. Chu is a founding board member of the Axel Springer Freedom Foundation in Berlin, Germany, and special advisor to the President and CEO of MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger in Los Angeles, USA. Most recently, Chu was awarded the Decoration of Solidarity and Human Rights by the European Solidarity Centre in Gdansk, Poland. A first-generation immigrant from Hong Kong to the US, Chu is the son of Rev. Chu Yiu Ming, who co-founded the Occupy Central and Umbrella Movement in 2014. The elder Chu was later tried and convicted in 2019 on charges related to the protests.
